Kirtan: The Great Chants of the Himalayas Currently - Out of Stock
Over 25 years ago, in the foothills of the Himalayas in a small temple, Krishna Das, Bhagavan Das, Jai Uttal and others sat with the Kirtan wallas (purveyors) who chanted the Maha Mantra (Great Chant) 18 hours a day. The field recordings presented here capture the source of their inspiration. Accompanied by only harmonium, manjira (cymbals) and dholak (drums) these singers create a metronomic beat and underlying drone with truly trance inducing results. It is the essence of Kirtan, of the mantra, of their path: a direct connection to the Divine without effort or embellishment. |

Now by Bhagavan Das
The
Wildman of Kirtan in collaboration with Mike
D of The Beastie Boys. Now! is
a decidedly modern approach to the ancient Hindi chant
tradition that will appeal to not only the traditional
yoga base but to a whole new genereation of music fans
weaned on electronic, chill and new psychedelic music.
It is a captivating merging of the Bhakti yoga spiritual
tradition and modern studio wizardry. Ancient chants are
brilliantly recast in a swirling amalgam of beats, loops
and sampling. Indeed, Now! is a brave new chapter in the
history of Hindi chant recordings -- anchored in tradition
yet experimental, reverent yet fun. |
